About volume

Volume is how much space a 3D shape holds, in cubic units (m³, cm³) or litres. You need the right dimensions (e.g. radius and height).

For a compound shape, split it into simpler parts, work out each volume and add them.

Volume formulae

Cube: V = a³

Cuboid: V = L × w × h

Cylinder: V = πr²h

Sphere: V = (4/3)πr³

Cone: V = (1/3)πr²h

Pyramid: V = (1/3) × base area × h

Units

  • 1 m³ = 1,000 L.
  • 1 m³ = 1,000,000 cm³.
  • 1 L = 1 dm³.
  • 1 cm³ = 1 mL.
  • Use the same unit for every dimension; convert beforehand if necessary.

Example results

Cube: a=5 → V=125 cm³.

Cylinder: r=3, h=4 → V≈113.1 cm³.

Sphere: r=4 → V≈268.1 cm³.

Pyramid: base 3×3, h=6 → V=18 cm³.
